The road to Body Navigation

Flat Corner : further development toward St.Petersburg

We were discussing about minimal conceptual, practical and technical details we will need to organize the work in St. Petersburg.
We were wondering about different topics and dramaturgical set up…..

We concluded that it will not be possible to set up a real show, so we will prepare enough material for a 10 minute long performance.
The setting will be as follows: There will be two performers in front of a projector and the projections will show prerecorded, animated and edited material of digital faces projected on the faces of the performers. This will be accompanied by a soundtrack.

Because of the short preparation period we will conceptually focus on
what are the basic interests of Flat Corner related to what is Body Navigation festival topics

Flat Corner Topics:
-Multiple subjectivity
-Fragile identities

Body Navigation Topics:
-Body perception through technology

During this week, we wondered about working with the atmosphere of the flat ( If we are going to have a flat in Russia) or gender or age, but because of the short period we after that decided to continue working on what is our primal statements.
(For example : gender will need a very complicate work concerning animation for Filip and dramaturgy for us etc. etc…)

We thought to concentrate our individual work ( during the next months) on building different elements that will enable us to work as better as possible.
This elements are for now : age transition , gender transition, beauty-uglyness transition ,emotional transition
The step after will be to relate these conceptual elements to our “own” discipline, and to dividing the work in different tasks :
concerning Filip : animation about the transitions
Arnold : sound composition
Ambra and Lotta : we will have to film ourselves

Timeline : The first steps will have to be the films of Ambra and Lotta, then they will be discussed on the blog after be uploaded on youtube (linked to the blog). After that, we have to make a final selection of fragments (elements), and compose them in a timespan of 10 minutes.
If this is done, Filip can get the high quality versions of the fragments, so he can animate some parts and also decide what kind of animation (which will be discussed).
In the mean time, Arnold can work on the sound. For now the idea is to only use samples of bodysounds as a startingpoint, and use the composition as a guide.
In the end, we all will have a collection of material parts which we can use in St. Petersburg for extemporaneous composition.

The above does not mean that we are not free to deal in St Petersburg with the main things we already experimented: male-beard digital face on female face----shifting of faces….etc etc….but that we are more looking forward to a fragmented representation then a whole show.

Lotta zei

Dear everyone.

I forgot my google name...

I think your summary is very clear and also not too time optimistic = reachable. I'd like to get a little more input on how I should film myself, is this going to be material for Filip to further develop, or shall I make a "ready" ingredient? (or both?) and what set up do I need in order to make the material easy to use.

One comment I have is that in St Petersburg we also collaborate with 3 more people. I think it can be great with the meeting of Arnolds sound/music and Johannes (he is both a skilled improvisation musician on bas&double bas and also play live electronics). Further yes, it seems like we will have an apartment and there I think Tobias who is a light designer can be of great help and Sasha the performer. I just want to address the thought of the extended collaboration once more, so that we don't end up just discussing instead of doing.. when we are 7 people.

I think we could have the 10 minute performance as the main goal and build a concept and context (of simpler technical kind) to enhance this 10 minute performance. For this I for example think that we can have great use for our extra people.

One idea, I got now, would be to have Sasha as a real person as part of the showing. It's a bit far away from me now all our (and your new) conceptual ideas, but since he speaks russian it could be interesting to give him a voice in the performance. Maybe it's completely wrong direction.. but I came to think about psychiatrist/patient situation.. I just throw stupid ideas out now incase you get inspired by them.. I think the projection figures give a kind of oracle feeling and even if it's maybe a torn concept I think many people see a shrink because of transitions. You also go through a depression - a transition.

I continue brain storming..

Imagine there is a room/procedure in the apartment that all visitors have to go through. Maybe all guests have to pass this place when entering, giving a subject/word/question. Or as we tried with MOVE fill out a form.. Maybe a "health declaration" (but of course twisted) If the subject at this first step deals with the content we want to address we are very likely to keep the audience oriented even if going more abstract (we once tried this with questions on moving habits and it worked well in orienting the audience to our field of thoughts).

To be honest I always feel a bit afraid when brain storming on my own, cause it's hard to make things clear and condense. I want this to be an interesting week for both Flat Corner and Move, so I would be happy to hear what you think about the extended collaboration.

Further I will have the chance to catch beautiful old babushkas that we can use... since I'm traveling in Russia before we meet in Petersburg.

How is Step Beyond going?

..and please I address it again. I have to buy a projector. Which one? I'd like to order it latest next week
